Case Study 12 - Machine & Operator Safety using Eureka-iD

UK waste services provider improves health and safety on compacting equipment using Eureka-iD

Health & Safety Improvements

One of the UK's largest integrated waste management businesses, providing collection, landfill and special waste services to local authorities, industry and commercial clients implemented Eureka-iD on compacting equipment to improve operational safety.

Improving Machine Safety

Safety is paramount, not just for work personnel but to the general public in close vicinity to waste collection vehicles. The challenge for Avonwood was to provide fail-safe, hands free machine activation system that would put vehicles compacting equipment in to a safe mode when authorised operatives were away from the equipments control points, to prevent tampering, accidental operation and injury.

The system had to operate on a fleet of commercial waste collection vehicles. Had to be easy to install and had to function without interfering with the crews work routine. /p>

Chosen System

The Eureka-iD active tagging system was the perfect product solution for this application as the flexible modular design and operational abilities of Eureka-iD lends itself to this application without compromise.

Versatility

Eureka-iD offers protection for single and multiple control points on vehicles to provide added flexibility for the operatives. The system is designed to work discreetly for an unlimited number of operators.

How it works

Safe & Secure

Operators and vehicle crew carry a Eureka-iD tag at all times. The tag is woken up when it enters an activation zone, controlled by an RF antenna. Data from the operators tag is then sent to a reader unit mounted on the vehicle to determine if the operator is authorised to activate the machinery. When the authorised operator is identified the machines controls are enabled allowing full operation of the equipment. This process is completely hands free, automatic and instantaneous.

A distribution box allows system activity to be easily monitored and provides a simple system installation point on vehicles and static machinery.

Safe and Secure

The final solution has been manufactured to meet CE and E approval to provide a machine safety system suitable for different environments. Proven RFID technology provides a safe and secure working zone for different types of equipment without compromising work flow.

Conclusion

Using the flexibility of Eureka-iD, Avonwood delivered a comprehensive machine safety solution fulfilling all the essential criteria without any compromise to work flow.

The Eureka-iD system known as SafeZone now operates on the customer's fleet of waste collection vehicles. These vehicles are made totally secure when there are no authorised personnel present, preventing tampering and accidental operation of the machinery.
